Gesture, Intentionality and Temporality in Machine-Mediated Performance

This research project examines, studies, analyzes, meditates on, and evaluates the ways that technological mediation in performance drastically influences perceptions of  “gesture” (as a multi-sensory and embodied phenomenon), “intention”, and the flow of time. This research asks: How does the perception of “sonic gesture” mediate one’s understanding of an electroacoustic piece of music? Or signal the intentions of a performer purely through listening to the sound field?  What is our expanded notion of “posthuman” gestural intention in performance contexts mediated by many layers of machine translation? In ensemble electroacoustic improvisations, how does the ability to play with time itself using technologies influence the perception of time/timelessness by performer or by audience? How might interactive systems serve to productively “defamiliarize” an established movement or sound-based practice for communities of practitioners?
